Sure, the Wild West on TV shows like "Gunsmoke" isn't entirely based in reality, but it maintains that frontier spirit that Americans find so fascinating. 

"Gunsmoke" did such a great job of bringing the old West into American homes that it eventually became one of the longest-running scripted shows in history, airing more than 20 seasons between 1955 and 1975. It was the #1 show on TV from 1957 to 1961, and even when viewership dropped in the late '60s, the network decided to cancel the beloved "Gilligan's Island" in an effort to keep "Gunsmoke" on the air for a few more years.
