It takes a lot to be a police officer. You have to be brave as well as level-headed. You have to be able to spend hours doing nothing, but still be constantly on the alert for danger and ready for when things go down. You have to be good at paperwork and be in good shape and prepared to throw down at a moments notice. A good cop also has to be able to talk to and be comfortable with anyone, no matter what walk of life they are from.  

Now take all of these things that you have to be good at if you want to be a police officer, and then magnify them all by a thousand, and that might give you an idea of how tough it is to be a police officer in the NYPD.

New York City isn't for everyone, a lot is going on there all the time, and not all of it is good. Just even walking around in NYC is enough to shock the senses; can you imagine being the person in charge of keeping everything lawful and orderly?
